Elms back at the helm // New hybrids are resistant to disease

The elm - which once lined the great boulevards of the Midwest - is making a comeback.

Intriguing new hybrids of the elm tree are appearing in Chicago area landscapes. Many have the trademark vase-shaped silhouette similar to American elms, but they resist the disease that has ravaged the American elm.

"American elms were a dominant and revered street tree with strong wood and a graceful shape," said Dr. George Ware, elm researcher for the Morton Arboretum. "But two-thirds of the 75 to 80 million elm trees in America have been lost, and in some Midwestern towns more than 95 percent have ...
