Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe is sitting on a sofa in his South
Side apartment, reminiscing about his baseball career, when his
instincts take over.
"Have you seen my book?" he asks.
Without waiting for an answer, he says to Claire Hellstern, a
nurse and longtime friend, "Get one of those books. They made you
come here. Buy something."
Being 95 years old has its privileges, so the deal is made.
Radcliffe autographs the book with a right hand that resembles tree
bark. His fingers are swollen and bent from his years as a catcher,
but the signature is surprisingly neat.
