My commentary last week on issues harness-racing fans really care
about seems to have exposed a raw nerve.
Judging from the phone calls, letters and e-mail that have
crossed my desk, a whole lot of fans are fed up with the quality of
competition in Illinois standardbred racing. They echoed, for
example, my consternation about the number of truly awful,
unhandicappable horses that pollute fields on the Chicago circuit and
concurred with my conclusion that a system that perpetuates
