Sure, snow is in the forecast. But if you plan now, you can design a garden that springs to life with fluttering butterflies and jeweled hummingbirds.

At Carolee's Herb Farm in Hartford City, Ind., in summer,birds and butterflies are drawn to brightly colored gardens of flowering annuals, planted in two informal borders glowing with red, orange and yellow. A walk cuts between the borders, allowing visitors to mingle close beside their winged guests.
