Political pro eyed for Bowles' job

WASHINGTON Prominent Clinton administration officials want an experienced Washington politician as the next White House chief of staff and specifically boost Chairman Vic Fazio of California of the House Democratic Caucus.

The current chief, businessman Erskine Bowles, no sooner moved into the White House after the 1996 election than he started talking of returning to North Carolina. Administration insiders want a more experienced hand such as Bowles' predecessor, former Rep. Leon Panetta of California.
