Sew what? Relishing hemp's new image

I'm taking up sewing.
Several weeks ago, I was driving through Des Moines when I heard
about Roosevelt Fabrics, 835 42nd St., in Iowa's oldest shopping
center.
Roosevelt Fabrics is on the cutting edge of the sewing scene.
It's the Midwest's biggest source of hemp. Championed by actor Woody
Harrelson, hemp is the environmentally correct cannabis sativa herb
with a wacky stock that can be transformed into strong, linenlike
fiber.
Ever since fabric store owner Laura DeLong ran a tiny ad
promoting her hemp in the May issue of Threads magazine, she's been
besieged with calls and letters from ...
