Richard Norton Smith takes as his latest subject Col. Robert R.
McCormick, who owned, ran, and, for more than half a century, imposed
his ramrod conservatism on the Chicago Tribune. Although "the
Colonel," as he was called since his service in World War I, died in
1955 and his paper has evolved into something more balanced and
bland, his shadow hovers over Tribune Tower.
