Willie Rogers closed his eyes and raised his right hand as if he were reaching for an heirloom from heaven.

Delivering the upbeat "Sing" before a standing-room-only crowd of more than 750 fans, his gospel falsetto carried a smooth flair that was eerily similar to the voice of Sam Cooke.

Rogers is lead singer for the Soul Stirrers, the legendary gospel quartet of which the late Cooke was also a member. He was performing in a live recording session Monday night at the New Bethlehem Baptist Church No. 4, 8850 S. Cottage Grove. The album will be the 36th in the storied Soul Stirrers catalog. ...
