Oldsmobile introduced a "rocket" in 1949. Only this rocket had
eight cylinders, not afterburners. Placement of it in the new, light
Olds 88 resulted in the first high-volume U.S. performance car - the
1949-50 Olds "Rocket 88."
You could get a sleek Rocket 88 coupe with its astonishing new
V-8 for as low as $2,143, or just a few hundred bucks more than a
Ford coupe with an old-style V-8. And the Olds offered more
performance for the money than anything on the road.
