Once there was a one-room schoolhouse way out west at a crossroads called Pacific Junction. That's what the school was called, too.

Pretty soon it was replaced with a big brick building called Bismarck School, and the street names were changed to Central Park Avenue and Armitage.

Along came World War I. German names were out. The school was renamed for a wildly popular general - the man who in 1901 captured Philippine independence leader Emilio Aguinaldo during the Spanish-American War (winning the Medal of Honor), who commanded troops that saved San Francisco from starvation and disorder ...
