Oakland Hills: a masterpiece // But weather has damaged Ross' course

Donald Ross was America's most prolific golf-course architect, and arguably its best.

He designed more than 400 courses between 1907 and his death in 1948, some at Chicago's oldest private clubs.

Beverly, Bob O'Link, Calumet, Evanston, Exmoor, Hinsdale, Indian Hill, LaGrange, Northmoor, Oak Park, Old Elm, Ravisloe and Skokie have Ross courses.

Ross' best work, however, was probably Oakland Hills' South course in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., a Detroit suburb.

Oakland Hills: once a 'monster,' now a mecca
