Prices Dip at Pollution Auction // EPA Raises Number of Allowances

The price of pollution dropped this week to an all-time low at a newly expanded annual auction at the Chicago Board of Trade.

The spot price for acid rain-causing sulfur dioxide allowances at this year's auction was $68.14, down from $132 a year ago, the CBOT said Tuesday.

The price for the allowances has plunged precipitously in recent months. It was $79 in February.

An allowance lets the holder emit one ton of the pollutant per year.
