It's Just a Hoax, `Unabomber' Says // 1st Letter Threatens L.A. Jetliner - Then 2nd Letter Calls It a `Prank'

LOS ANGELES A threat to blow up an airliner out of Los Angeles International Airport within six days - which led officials to impose extraordinary security at California airports and hold airmail packages to and from the state - was all a hoax, the "Unabomber" said in a letter to the New York Times on Wednesday.

The Times said the FBI authenticated the mail late in the day at its headquarters in Washington.

The Times said that it had received the letter a short time earlier and that the Unabomber took responsibility for the bomb threat and said the whole thing was a ruse.
