Former Chief Justice Burger Dies // Presided Over Divisive Cases From Abortion to Watergate

WASHINGTON Warren E. Burger, who was chief justice of the United States during one of the Supreme Court's most socially turbulent eras, died Sunday of congestive heart failure. He was 87.

Chief Justice Burger was nominated by President Richard M. Nixon in 1969 to roll back judicial liberalism. But Chief Justice Burger instead presided over a court - dominated by remaining liberal justices - that made abortion legal nationwide, endorsed affirmative action and sanctioned busing.
