Chicken Pox Immunizations Available for 1st Time in U.S.

Starting today, a vaccine will be available to immunize U.S. children against the common childhood illness chicken pox.

"This vaccine will save lives and prevent people from having to be hospitalized," said Dr. Ram Yogev, an infectious disease expert at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

Merck & Co., of West Point, Pa., is shipping the vaccine to pediatricians' offices, with the first doses expected to arrive this week, said a spokeswoman for the manufacturer. The Food...
