DANA, Ind. When a sniper's bullet silenced World War II's most renowned war correspondent on the Pacific island of Ie Shima, the men whom the master storyteller wrote about so eloquently erected a simple memorial.

"At this spot, the 77th Infantry Division lost a buddy, Ernie Pyle, 18 April 1945."

Now his hometown of Dana, Ind., is honoring the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who covered World War II for the Scripps-Howard Newspaper Alliance. It is dedicating a new $1 million visitors center at the Ernie Pyle State Historic Site - set to open April 18, the 50th anniversary of his death.
