It's hard to know how seriously to take Sholem Asch's 1907 "God of Vengeance" nearly 100 years on. The plot is lurid and overcooked: Can Yankel Shapshovitch, a whoremaster, keep his budding daughter Rivkeleh "pure"? Can he buy the goodwill of God by commissioning a handwritten Torah?

Or will God punish him for his abundant sins? Might this God of vengeance turn Rivkeleh into a "working girl" or even -- horror of horrors -- a contented lesbian?
