Thirty years ago, electric guitar legend Jimi Hendrix died from an overdose of sleeping pills. And 30 years ago this fall, I made my first overseas trip -- to Diabet, Morocco, a humble Berber village that Hendrix wanted to buy.

In the early 1970s, hordes of hippies roamed the narrow alleys of nearby Essaouira, a wind-battered but beautiful port town two miles north of Diabet, in search of a cheap room and a bowl of couscous for less than $5 per day.
