Melting Pot Ideal Takes Its Lumps at Schurz

Some Anglos who went to Carl Schurz High School years ago derisively sniff that it ought to be called Carlos Schurz now.

And some Mexican and Puerto Rican students who attend Schurz spice their conversations with references to "the Polacks."

Schurz, 3601 N. Milwaukee, is no different from many other schools and workplaces in the United States. While the American melting pot may get stirred, it doesn't get pureed.

But tensions have escalated recently at Schurz. Police said a Polish student was jumped Oct. 18 near the school by two students who are members of the Latin Kings.
