Most people hardly give it a second glance - a harmless-looking ribbon of steel in the roadbed of the L tracks. But for a surprising number of the hopeless, the clumsy or the merely unfortunate, the "third rail" and its 600 volts have been a source of immediate death.

In the past decade, at least 14 people have met death in the magnetic clutches of the 10,000-amp rail along CTA train lines.

They've died urinating on the rail, tripping over the rail, hitching rides on the back of trains and then falling onto the rail. One man was heaved onto the rail by a rival gang.
