When he toppled Zairian dictator Mobutu Sese Seko in May 1997 and seized power in the country he renamed Congo, Kabila was hailed as a new hope for a forlorn nation. But the new self-declared president turned out to be an autocrat in Mobutu's mold. Kabila's despotism deepened, the high hopes he had raised were rapidly dashed, and his list of enemies grew.
