A Woman's Kind of Town // Celebrating the Women Who Made Our City Work

The City of Big Shoulders always has had a masculine image: big skyscrapers, mammoth engineering projects, steelmaking and wheeling and dealing. But it's also the City of Powerful Curves, since 50 percent of Chicago's population also has worked (often unnoticed) to make the city great.

Women's contributions to Chicago history are vast, but not all that easy to find. For instance, there isn't one public statue of a real woman in any city park - only sculptures of mythical females. This situation will be remedied when a statue of Jane Addams is erected in a park at the base of Navy Pier.
