People have been trying to revive Lorraine Hansberry's "The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window" virtually since the day it opened on Broadway in 1964. The play nearly closed in its first week after receiving mixed reviews for its story about social commitment among a demographically inclusive cross-section of Greenwich Villagers. Intense fundraising and publicity efforts kept the show alive until Hansberry herself died three months later, from cancer, at the age of 34.
