Bookplates Are Steeped In History
|
My favorite secondhand bookstore is pushing gummed bookplates as
gifts. "Put them in books you're proud to own, like the old days,"
says Bess, the owner, flicking a feather duster over many copies of
The Bridges of Madison County.
Bess grew up in the 1920s, right in the middle of the so-called
"Golden Age" of American bookplates, a time when modern printing
techniques and sophisticated design joined to produce a rich variety
of quality printed material.
