2 Couples Missing in France Mudslide

LA SALLE-EN-BEAUMONT, France A wall of mud barreled into a tiny
village in southern France early Saturday, and two elderly couples
were missing, rescue workers said.
The mudslide, about 100 yards wide, uprooted trees and engulfed
eight houses as it piled into La Salle-en-Beaumont, in the Isere
region near the French Alps.
The area, and others throughout France, have been pelted by
heavy rains in recent weeks. President Francois Mitterrand, wearing
rubber boots, toured a flooded village in western France in a boat.
"It was like being in an end-of-the-world movie," Rudy Dedeale,
