Lawrence Block has no need to make life prettier than it really is. His mystery novels represent a sustained effort to capture - and perhaps to revel in - life's ugliness. While "realistic" cop shows like "NYPD Blue" purport to show life "warts and all," Block's moody page-turners depict a world that is all warts.

At least, that's the impression one gets from Block's highly successful and eminently readable Matthew Scudder series. In each story, Scudder, an ex-cop and ex-boozer, fights to stay sober as he confronts the ogres who rule New York's nocturnal soul: murderers, rapists, ...
