Hales Lays New Course for Future

Another Chicago high school is short of cash.

The good news is that this one may have found a way to solve the problem.

At a news conference Tuesday, the religious order that operated Hales Franciscan High School disclosed it has turned over control of the South Side school to a lay board.

Following the example of many Catholic colleges and universities, such as Notre Dame and Loyola, Hales is among the first Catholic high schools to make such a dramatic change. Hales is located at 4930 S. Cottage Grove in a section of the city with high rates of poverty. Its announcement is noteworthy.
