Art historians have had a devil of a time with Lovis Corinth. Even now, nearly 70 years after his death in 1925, they don't really know quite what to do with him. Some catalog the German painter and printmaker as an Impressionist, while others insist he belongs to the ranks of the Expressionists. Neither label ever has seemed suitable.
