NEW YORK The legend began almost 60 years ago when a shy teenager entered an amateur-night competition at Harlem's Apollo Theater.

When her turn came, she stood frozen onstage, her knees shaking, until someone called out from backstage to just sing something.

Ella Fitzgerald opened her mouth and sang, "If a voice can bring, every hope of the spring" (lyrics from a long-forgotten song titled "Judy"). The audience demanded an encore; she won the competition. It was the beginning of a love affair between a singer and her public that has endured through seven decades.
