Blood Supply Stays in Demand // Maintaining Inventory Of Vital Commodity Is a Delicate Business

Soon after her husband died in July, 1981, Judith DeMain was called by a blood center to donate blood to help a cancer patient with the same blood type.

DeMain put aside her grief and rolled up her sleeve for a stranger, a selfless act in which she has engaged more than 100 times during the last 16 years.

"It was important to help this person, so I did it," said the 62-year-old Highland Park woman. "The blood bank called me later to tell me that the patient had rallied and made it."

This was a rare instance in which DeMain learned how her donation of A-positive helped. After giving ...
