Darling `Heady' Winner Now // A's Pitcher Uses Smarts For Success

A week before the All-Star break, just as Oakland pitcher Ron Darling was growing frustrated with throwing one awful game for every two decent ones, Dave Duncan pulled him aside in Detroit for a moment of introspection. Duncan is the Athletics' pitching coach and acknowledged guru to veteran pitchers in need of renewal.

"His thinking," Darling said, "is very Zen." That would make him the Andre Agassi of pitching coaches.

Duncan posed one question to Darling that day in Detroit: "What do you think your greatest attribute is?"
