Vintage Linoleum May Be Deftly Salvaged or Repaired
|
Sooner or later, virtually all old-house restorers meet with
linoleum - or at least with the stubborn, solvent-defying remains of
its black felt underlayment.
Linoleum more often is found in a kitchen or bathroom, but it
could be almost anyplace in the house. In houses built after 1890,
it may well be original.
Until recently the typical response to even the best preserved
linoleum was "Yuck!" Out came the electric sander and into the
dumpster went an important document in house history in the mistaken
belief that exposed wood floors were somehow more authentic.
