Q. I am a competitive sprinter. I am not a science major, but my
roommate is. He babbles about lactic acid, and how he could tell how
well-conditioned I am by measuring my lactic acid levels. Can you
make this understandable?
A. I'll try. The brief bursts of energy involved in sprinting
breaks down your muscle sugar - your glycogen - so quickly that
oxygen isn't even involved in the burning. In that situation, the
muscles involved make lactic acid.
