Lawrence Towner, headed Newberry

Lawrence W. "Bill" Towner, 70, a historian who headed the Newberry Library for 24 years, died Friday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Towner went to Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton, as president in 1962. He is credited for leading Newberry into the forefront of independent research libraries.

He oversaw the rare materials in the library's collection and presided over the creation of one of the first conservation laboratories to be built in a library.

The lab became a training center for book and paper conservators who later took their skills to other libraries. He retired in 1986 ...
