Invoking the name of Warren Gamaliel Harding is always good for a laugh. The 29th president of the United States was distinguished only by his ambition for the job and the scandals that followed his election in 1920.

That gave novelist Robert Plunket a head start in writing My Search for Warren Harding (HarperPerennial, $9), the story of a thoroughly unscrupulous, conniving and raunchy academic, Elliot Weiner, in pursuit of definitive evidence of Harding's extramarital love life.
