Lyric teaches lesson in making opera pay
|
It appears that the Internal Revenue Service is persnickety about
tax deductions for Lyric Opera tickets.
The picky IRS attitude is understandable in that a single ticket
for a Lyric performance can cost as much as $89. That's for a seat
in the closer rows on the main floor. Or it was the cost in the
opera season just ended. In the 1992-93 season, the top price will
edge up to $94.
All this has special importance to Chicago's opera company. A
remarkable footnote to the Lyric success is the fact that ticket
sales annually exceed the number of tickets available for sale.
