Lyric teaches lesson in making opera pay

It appears that the Internal Revenue Service is persnickety about tax deductions for Lyric Opera tickets.

The picky IRS attitude is understandable in that a single ticket for a Lyric performance can cost as much as $89. That's for a seat in the closer rows on the main floor. Or it was the cost in the opera season just ended. In the 1992-93 season, the top price will edge up to $94.

All this has special importance to Chicago's opera company. A remarkable footnote to the Lyric success is the fact that ticket sales annually exceed the number of tickets available for sale.
