'50s Rauschenberg: Paving the way for Pop and beyond
|
During the 1950s, the role of the New York art world's enfant
terrible fell to Robert Rauschenberg. It was perfect casting. By
mid-decade, the young artist already had produced some of the most
audacious works ever made. There was, for instance, the Willem de
Kooning drawing he erased, labeled and framed. Or the 22-foot-long
print of an automobile tire tread. Or the rock simply tied to a wood
block.
Because of Rauschenberg's flair for the unconventional, few at
