British playwright Arnold Wesker likes to assume female voices.

For example, several years ago I heard him give an artful reading of a series of his one-act plays, all written for women's voices. And his performance of these monologues, which have come to be known as the "One Woman Play Cycle," was impeccable - a canny shirt-sleeve portrayal of several extremely different but memorable characters that never slid into impersonation or drag.
