49 day care centers meet fire safety rules

Mayor Daley's threat to shut down licensed day care centers has prodded 49 of 50 facilities to comply with new fire safety requirements, prompting the city to postpone the deadline for a week.

Maria Whelan, director of children's services for the Department of Human Services, said the center that has not complied has until Jan. 13 to submit plans for a new fire alarm system and hire a contractor.

She refused to identify the center.
