Hockney puts his spin on Lyric's `Turandot'
|
Stage designer David Hockney has came to the Lyric Opera of
Chicago to do Puccini's "Turandot," but he left many of the opera's
ornate trappings behind.
Hockney, born in Britain and a California resident since 1964,
wanted to avoid the heavily Chinese look so typical of "Turandot"
designs.
Lyric's new production of Puccini's last opera, with Eva Marton
in the title role, will open at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Civic Opera
House. Lyric's final production of the 1991-92 season presents a
work the company has not staged for 22 years.
