Rights group says wrongful bombing killed 1,000 in gulf

WASHINGTON In 43 days of intense aerial bombardment, the United
States and its allies may have killed as many as 1,000 Iraqi
civilians and destroyed 240 dwellings in Iraq in attacks that
violated international law, the human-rights organization Middle East
Watch contends.
Those "needless deaths" represent about a third of the 3,000
Iraqi civilians who probably perished in allied air raids, the
watchdog group said in a 402-page report made public Saturday.
