A charm is a spell or incantation spoken or sung to invoke and
control supernatural powers. Charms, which are universally known, are
among the earliest forms of recorded literature. They carry the
resonance of magic rites in archaic cultures, and, indeed, the Old
English charms (against wens, against the theft of cattle, for taking
a swarm of bees, for replenishing the earth) are some of the first
written works in our literature.
