PALOS DE LA FRONTERA, Spain The explorer's statue stands boldly, bearing cross and sword. It is the principal adornment of the compact main square in this Andalusian town that saw the three ships of Christopher Columbus weigh anchor in the Rio Tinto on Aug. 3, 1492, and set sail west into an unknown ocean.

But it is not a statue of Columbus. Palos de la Frontera honors instead its native son Martin Alonso Pinzon, who captained the Pinta on that momentous voyage of discovery, which sought the Indies and found the New World instead. Captaining the Nina was his younger brother, Vicente Yanez ...
