Vice-President Quayle has touched a raw nerve by suggesting that America has too many lawyers and lawsuits.

The vice president also delivered a critique of legal services in this country that's more profoundly interesting: that the legal system is costly and inefficient and interferes with our ability to compete in world markets.

Are the costs the law imposes on our economy worth bearing? The vice president implies that they are not. He is wrong.
