NASA names observatory for deceased U. of C. figure

NASA is renaming its $617 million orbiting Gamma Ray Observatory
to honor the late University of Chicago physicist Arthur Holly
Compton.
Henceforth, the 17-ton spacecraft will be known as the Compton
Observatory, short for Arthur Holly Compton Gamma Ray Observatory.
The space shuttle Atlantis launched the observatory last April.
It will study black holes, quasars, solar flares, exploding stars and
other sources that emit gamma rays.
Compton's work provided clues to the present understanding of
the processes that create gamma rays. He demonstrated one of the
