Versatility gives Douglass leg up on Bear survival

In defensive back Maurice Douglass' six years on the fringes of the Bears roster, approximately 40 players have been brought in to take his job.

Forty players who were supposed to be younger, stronger, quicker and smarter.

None has been better.

This pre-season for the sixth time looked as if it would be Douglass' last, but he has been as easy to bury as Lazarus.

"He's qualified," coach Mike Ditka said Monday. "He's played in the league. His chances are pretty darn good to make the team."
