Jean-Pierre Rampal makes music fans salute the flute

This has been a good summer for flute lovers.

Not only was there a chance last month to hear irrepressible Irishman James Galway performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia. Jean-Pierre Rampal, the urbane French master who will celebrate his 70th birthday this season, will appear at Ravinia Thursday night. He will play an all-Vivaldi program with the Ravinia Festival Orchestra, conducted by Vittorio Negri.

Given the flute's current popularity, especially among young concertgoers who are just venturing into classical music, it's difficult to recall that solo flute concerts ...
