French architecture pops up in unexpected places

French-style houses were few in early 20th century America, but unlike Spanish-style casas they did not even show up frequently where expected.

New Orleans, with its vibrant French heritage, had to wait until the 1960s for a new French building boom.

Mostly, the French revival of the 1920s and '30s was in the suburbs of Chicago and other large Eastern and Midwestern cities. There was, of course, a detour to Southern California, where the style took on Hollywood airs.
