Savoring surprises in South Tyrol
|
BRIXEN, Italy Picture a corner of Europe where Italians speak German,
Germans take siestas, and a restaurateur is likely as not to serve
you a Wienerschnitzel after your tortellini alla pananna.
Add red wines that taste like white wines, townsfolk who still
wear feathered hats and forest-green jackets, and an 80-mile-an-hour
expressway slicing through a countryside where villagers claiming to
be the descendants of a lost Imperial Roman legion still school their
children in a dialect of ancient Latin.
I thought I knew Europe, but a visit this spring to Italy's
South Tyrol taught me there ...
