BRIXEN, Italy Surprisingly, the Bavarian metropolis of Munich has the closest major airport to the South Tyrol.

Munich's terminal, which is to be replaced next year, is among the easiest in Europe to use. Car rentals are just outside the door. There are express highways (toll in Italy and parts of Austria) from Munich to Brixen.
